Drama
An extensive programme of co-curricular Drama activities provides opportunities across the school, and is an integral part of the commitment to learning outside the classroom, all supported by excellent facilities and staff with experience and expertise in various aspects of theatre, music, dance and performance. As well as the school hall, which is equipped with an extensive lighting rig and sound system for large scale productions, our studio theatre, equally well equipped to professional standards, is used both as a teaching space and for more intimate performances.
Students at Key Stage Three are welcome at the informal lunchtime Drama Clubs for Years 7-9, which are run by A-level students in order to foster a collaborative relationship across year groups. An annual summer production and a bi-annual musical for these students are popular activities. Recent productions include The 39 Steps, 400 Years (a specially commissioned play to celebrate the quarter-centenary of the school); and Oliver! in 2024.
The DCGS Musical, for Years 10-13 has been a highlight of the school calendar for decades, and there have been highly acclaimed performances in recent years: the UK amateur premiere of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; Our House; We Will Rock You; and, most recently in 2025, Footloose: the musical. A senior play is staged each year (and has been since the 1920s) for Sixth Formers, often directed by students themselves, again to critical acclaim. Recent productions have included The Tempest, All My Sons and Twelve Angry Men. DCGS and Dr Challoner’s High School students often collaborate on senior and musical productions.
A number of students are actively involved in the stage, sound, and lighting crews, for which they are provided with full training in health and safety. These can greatly enhance a student’s study or widen provision for those who prefer not to perform.
