Year 10 Silverstone Trip
On 24 September, Year 10 students visited the Silverstone race track for our Enrichment Day.
Motorsport is a highly competitive scene that brings cutting-edge technology out of the laboratory and onto the racetrack. Consequently, a large part of our day was dedicated to learning about these incredible technologies through talks from specialists and the fabulous Silverstone Museum. A racing team needs a whole range of specialities to succeed: from designers and engineers to optimise the car’s engine, chassis and aerodynamics, to mechanics, strategists and drivers to bring the win home on race day. It was inspiring to see how science, math, and creativity are all combined in this sport. For some of us, it provided us with new ideas for future careers in engineering, design, or even motor sport journalism.
Another highlight was finding out about the history of Silverstone. The now-iconic venue of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix started life as a Second World War airfield, with the first F1 race held there in 1950. It was amazing to see how the site has evolved to meet the demands of modern racing over the years.
By the end of the day, we returned to school not only with fond memories but also with a newfound respect for the amount of effort and ingenuity that goes into motorsport. Silverstone is not only a race track, but a place where passion, performance, and creativity all come together. Overall, the trip was a great mix of excitement, education, and inspiration, giving us a glimpse into a world where tenths of a second separate the winners from the rest of the field. Some of us left with a new source of inspiration and even dreams of returning someday as spectators, engineers or maybe even drivers.
