Sport & PE

Our objective is to create an inclusive and engaging environment to encourage students to discover an enjoyment of physical activity and sport in order to promote lifelong participation. We provide opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Such opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as leadership and teamwork. The physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

In Key Stage 3 we encourage:

  • Students to access a wide range of activities
  • Promote teamwork and character for students to enjoy sport
  • Encourage students to be able to take on active leadership roles
  • Understand the importance of health and fitness to enable students to lead healthy, active lives
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Build resilience in order to work as hard as possible in all activities
  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11 GCSE)

All students continue to receive two hours of Games and PE per week in order to encourage them to enjoy and engage fully with sport and promote the importance of physical and mental wellbeing. In addition students may choose to study PE GCSE; students follow the AQA (9-1) specification. 

The qualification is 60% exam based with the remaining 40% being assessed by teachers and moderated by AQA. For the practical element, students are required to perform in three different physical activities as a player/performer. One of these must be a team activity, one an individual activity and the third element can be either. Students also need to analyse and evaluate their performance to bring about an improvement in one activity.

For the written elements, the following topics are studied:

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Movement analysis
  • Physical training
  • Use of data
  • Sports psychology
  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Health, fitness and wellbeing

GCSE PE Specification

Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13 A Level)

Students are required to have gained at least a grade 6 at GCSE PE to take this course at A Level

BTEC Nationals provide specialist, work-related learning across a range of sectors. Delivering the knowledge, skills and understanding students need to prepare for their chosen career. BTEC Nationals offer progression to higher or further education or into employment.

  • Well suited to those wanting to go onto a sports related degree or a Sport related career
  • Equivalent UCAS points value to A-level
  • Recognised by majority of Universities
  • Different forms of assessment - Coursework and Exam based.

The qualification is equivalent to 1 ‘A Level’ and is 50% Exam based and 50% Coursework based. There are four compulsory units of study; Units 1 and 2 are examinations that take place in the January of Year 12 and Year 13. Units 3 and 4 are coursework which is ongoing with feedback offered throughout the course.

Topics studied are as follows:

  • Unit 1:Anatomy and Physiology
  • Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being
  • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry
  • Unit 4: Sports Leadership

BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport Specification

All students in Year 12 participate in regular physical activities to promote lifelong participation. In addition to competitive teams students can compete in activities including gym/weight training, yoga, badminton, table tennis and softball. Students have the choice each term to decide their activity for the coming weeks.

All students also have the opportunity to play competitive sport for the senior teams. We currently have three senior Football teams, a Rugby team and two Netball, Hockey and Cricket teams. 

Co-curricular activities

  •  Recreational clubs at lunch times in a variety of activities
  • Competitive fixtures in 15 different sports
  • House Sports competitions in various activities
  • Paid activities programme including fencing, climbing and boxing
  • Regular Sports Tours in Cricket, Football, Hockey, Tennis and Rugby Netball
