With the Challoner’s Christmas buzz of 2024 coming to an unfortunately dramatic end by 12:30 on Wednesday, I feel that it would be hard to sweep the recent carol concerts under the carpet.
The choir, coached and conducted by the brilliant Mr. Tansley, had been rehearsing the greatest carols, along with the annual special, ‘Gaudete’, for weeks and Tuesday’s successful performances were seen by us as grand rehearsals for the main event the following evening.
Simultaneously, with Mrs. Henshell at the helm, many diligent sixth-formers and I were working double-time in order to prepare the likes of ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘The First Nowell’ for both Wednesday’s service and an organised trip to Windsor Castle, where we were to sing among the greatest figures in British history, all lined up along a warmly-lit hall in the form of busts and portraits.
Wednesday came with a flash of full-day rehearsals, with everyone looking merry and bright as the bleak midwinter crawled into the old town with us on the renowned walk through the frosted forest. That evening, the congregation were astounded at the mere beauty of the sound received, especially from the soloist for the first verse of ‘Once In Royal David’s City’; what a masterclass from a rising star! It takes true stoicism to start a concert like that and he effortlessly pulled it off! It was truly a riveting service.
Friday also came swiftly - the day the sixth form choir were to sing inside Windsor Castle. Initially weak in the knees after dismounting the coach, we all marched up to the castle with great pride in our work from the past few weeks. We were to sing with gumption and diction, bravado and confidence - all of which were certainly accomplished under the eyes of the general public. Fundamentally, it was a brilliant experience, especially for me, being the novice in the sixth-form chamber choir that I am. I look forward to more pleasurable trips with this group!
And with that, the year comes to an end. That is it for another year. I want to say a final congratulations and thanks to both the teachers and students involved in making the last full week shine with Christmas cheer.
We should all accept 2025 with open arms (yes, you too year 11 and 13), with the opportunities this year being endless as they are. However, get some rest, work hard and meet some family while you are at it; It is a holiday after all.
Therefore, Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
