On Monday, 12 September, only our third day back at school, Year 8s reported to the school hall to have the HPV Vaccine.
But what is it? Well, the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) is comprised of HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18 extracted and refined from yeast cells, which is injected into the arm for about five seconds.
It is highly effective in protecting against different types of cancer spread through sexual intercourse and some types of skin to skin contact. HPV is a common infection and about 80% of people who haven’t been vaccinated will get it.
It is also estimated to be the cause of cancers of the anus, cervix, penile, vulval, vaginal and some types of head and neck; The HPV Vaccination will help in preventing you from contracting these cancers, hence the importance of the vaccine, and why the government runs this vaccination programme in schools.
